AssemblyScript is a TypeScript-like language that compiles to WebAssembly. Designed for performance-critical applications, especially in web and embedded environments, it enables developers familiar with TypeScript syntax to write efficient, low-level code. AssemblyScript offers precise memory management and predictable garbage collection, optimizing for speed and small binary sizes. It's a powerful tool for game development, audio/video processing, and other compute-intensive tasks requiring near-native performance within the browser.
AssemblyScript releases were sporadic in 2017-2019. Release frequency increased significantly in 2020 and remained high through 2021. In 2022, the releases slowed down, and in 2023 and 2024 fewer releases occurred. From January 2025 to August 2025, there were 9 releases. There have been no releases in September 2025 so far.
AssemblyScript npm package downloads show a general upward trend from March 2024 to August 2025. Downloads increased significantly in June and July 2025. September 2025 data is incomplete, showing early-month downloads, so the end of month downloads have not been recorded yet.
