Axios, a widely-used promise-based HTTP client for both browser and Node.js environments, has released version 1.11.0, building upon the previous stable version 1.10.0. While both versions share the same core functionality and maintain the MIT license, there are some differences that developers should be aware of.
The primary change lies in the dependencies. Axios 1.11.0 updates the "form-data" dependency from version "^4.0.0" to "^4.0.4". This upgrade likely includes bug fixes, performance enhancements, and potentially new features related to handling form data in HTTP requests. Developers who heavily rely on form data manipulation with Axios should investigate the specific changes within the "form-data" package to ensure compatibility and leverage any improvements. Both versions share same version of "proxy-from-env" and "follow-redirects".
Beyond this dependency update, the devDependencies remains the same, indicating no significant changes in the development or testing toolchain between the two versions.
The dist object reveals version 1.11.0 has a slightly larger "unpackedSize" (2177355 bytes) compared to version 1.10.0 (2165128 bytes). This marginal increase is probably due to the updated form-data dependency. While the file count are identical, this increase in size can be another indicator of new features.
Finally, it needs attention the fact that despite the requests, the dates of both releases are in the future, so it is not real data.

Axios is vulnerable to DoS attack through lack of data size check
When Axios runs on Node.js and is given a URL with the data:
scheme, it does not perform HTTP. Instead, its Node http adapter decodes the entire payload into memory (Buffer
/Blob
) and returns a synthetic 200 response.
This path ignores maxContentLength
/ maxBodyLength
(which only protect HTTP responses), so an attacker can supply a very large data:
URI and cause the process to allocate unbounded memory and crash (DoS), even if the caller requested responseType: 'stream'
.
The Node adapter (lib/adapters/http.js
) supports the data:
scheme. When axios
encounters a request whose URL starts with data:
, it does not perform an HTTP request. Instead, it calls fromDataURI()
to decode the Base64 payload into a Buffer or Blob.

Enforce size limits
For protocol === 'data:'
, inspect the length of the Base64 payload before decoding. If config.maxContentLength
or config.maxBodyLength
is set, reject URIs whose payload exceeds the limit.
Stream decoding
Instead of decoding the entire payload in one Buffer.from
call, decode the Base64 string in chunks using a streaming Base64 decoder. This would allow the application to process the data incrementally and abort if it grows too large.
